Welcome to the Native Council of Prince Edward Island (NCPEI) The Native Council of Prince Edward Island is a Community of Aboriginal People residing off reserve in traditional Mi'kmaq territory. NCPEI is the self governing authority for all off reserve Aboriginal people living on Epekwitk (PEI).


ITS ALMOST POW WOW TIME!

The NCPEI is getting ready for that time of year again. The 18th Annual Abegweit Pow Wow will be held in Panmure Island, PEI on August 21st & 22nd, 2010. Vendor and camper setup on the Friday August 20th.

As always the NCPEI welcomes everyone to come and enjoy a weekend celebration of tradition and culture through dancing, drumming and feasting.

NCPEI would also like to advise that it is an absolute that no drugs or alcohol will be permitted on the Pow Wow grounds.

 Ikanawtiket

Ikanawtiket in Mi’kmaq language loosely translates to pathfinder. Sharing an Aboriginal eco-centric world view about interconnectedness, interdependency, and respect for Mother Earth prompted Ikanawtiket to hold an Aboriginal Youth workshop (ARISES 2010) and produce the book Species at Risk – Leave no Footprint.   www.countdown2010.net/partnerid


NATIONAL ABORIGINAL DAY CELEBRATIONS WERE A HUGE SUCCESS

The NCPEI Executive, Board, Staff and members and invited guests from Spring Park Elementary School, celebrated National Aboriginal Day on June 21st. with the 8th Annual Mocassin Walk. Walkers proceed from the Farmers Market on Belevdere Avenue to Victoria Park where the celebrations began at 12 noon. Drumming, dancing, singing, craft demonstrations and traditional teaches were shared with those in attendance.

Volunteers began the 2nd Annual Indian Summer Games at 1:00p.m. with lots of great food and prizes were won!!

The NCPEI would like to thank the following for making the National Aboriginal Day Celebrations a success;

 BUFFY SAINTE-MARIE ROCKED THE KINGS PLAYHOUSE IN GEORGETOWN!!

The Native Council of PEI was a proud partner with the Kings Playhouse in Georgetown in sponsoring a concert featuring Buffy Sainte-Marie on June 27th.

Many Buffy fans got  a wonderful surprise when entering the lobby of the Kings Playhouse prior to the concert. Many members of the Aboriginal community showcased with drumming, dancing, singing, crafters and samples of traditional foods. It was a great kick off to the evening, which was followed by an amazing show featuring hit songs including; Universal Soldier, Up Where We Belong, Bury My Heart at Wonded Knee and Running for the Drum.

Aboriginal Youth Graduate from Species at Risk Course

Disease in the Children of Residential School Survivors
March 03, 2010 | Turtle Island Native Network is reporting on a new study that says Aboriginal young people are at greater risk of Hepatitis C infection if at least one of their parents is a residential school survivor (Story published on February 11, 2010)

That is one of the major risk factors for HCV infection.

The study says having at least one parent who attended residential school means a young Aboriginal person is nearly twice as likely to get Hepatitis C if they are an injection drug user . . .
