Raising of the Honour Pole, Panmure Island - June 11
On June 11, 2009, NCPEI held a ceremony to erect an honour pole carved by Aboriginal Artist Levi Cannon. The Honor Pole was created as a gift to the Aboriginal community to represent peace and healing. The date acknowledges the first anniversary (June 11, 2008) of the Federal Government’s apology for their role in the Indian residential schools systems.

National Aboriginal Day 2009

17th Annual Panmure Island Abegweit Pow Wow, August 14, 15, 16th
Each year, NCPEI hosts the Annual Abegweit Pow Wow at the Panmure Island Cultural Grounds the third weekend in August. The Pow wow serves as an excellent opportunity for cultural sharing and teaching as thousands of visitors attend from across the country.

New Horizons Elders & Youth Project
In the summer of 2009, numerous Elders and youth participated in a New Horizons project where the would meet throughout the summer where the Elders would share legends and the youth would draw. “Aboriginal Elder’s: Living the Journey to Ensure our Destiny” was the name of the book that was produced as a result of their efforts. A book launch was held to honour their hard work this past fall.

2009 Freezing for Warmth Campaign
On November 25th, 2009, over 20 staff, members and volunteers at the NCPEI slept out on the streets on the corner of University Avenue and Fitzroy Street to raise awareness for homelessness. NCPEI owns and operates the only women's homeless shelter in Charlottetown called Grandmother's House. This event also helped raised funds to assist in the operational costs of the shelter.
