In 1974, the Native Council of Prince Edward Island founded, Nanegkam Housing Corporation, which is a non-profit housing organization that assists off reserve aboriginal people to acquire affordable adequate accommodations off reserve.
With over 30 years of experience, Nanegkam Housing Corporation is currently Governed by grass roots members of our community who are responsible for policy decision making as Board of Directors. Our organization is Managed through the partnerships developed with both Atlantic Peoples Housing and Canada Mortgage Housing Corporation.
Nanegkam Housing offers a number of housing units under the Urban Native Housing Program, consisting of;
▸ 7 units -located in Summerside
▸ 49 units in Charlottetown
Types of housing include apartments, duplexes, townhouses and single family dwellings. Monthly rent amount is calculated at 25% of total household income. Damage deposits are required.

Rural Native Housing Program
Units are owned and managed by Canada Mortgage & Housing (CMHC). This program provides assistance to Aboriginal households in rural areas of PEI. There are presently 25 units in Rural PEI from Souris to Tignish. For Aboriginal people seeking affordable housing. Payments are no more than 25% of your income for rent minus a heating allowance.

Other Housing Programs
Emergency Repaid Program (ERP)
This program provides assistance to homeowners in rural and remote areas to undertake emergency repairs required for the safe occupancy of their house. A significant portion of this program is allotted to Aboriginal peoples. Assistance is in the form of a grant, depending on the cost of repairs. Maximum contribution under this program is $4,635 in this area.

The Homeowner Residential Rehabilitation Program (Homeowner RRAP)
Offers financial help to the low-income homeowners who need to make repairs to their homes. The program is aimed at people who live in substandard dwellings and cannot afford the repairs that are necessary to make their home safer and healthier to live in.
