Indigenous Tenant Support Initiative (ITSI)
The Indigenous Tenant Support Initiative (ITSI) helps off-reserve Indigenous peoples on PEI who are facing eviction or at risk of being evicted. ITSI offers workshops and one-on-one support designed to help tenants retain residences or be accepted into a new home.
These supports are based on a survey of tenant needs and include basic life skills, money management, career preparation, education, and employment support.
There is also a strong focus on health and wellness. Workshops are provided once a month in each of the three zones.
If required, additional sessions can be added to meet tenant needs. The workshop environment is safe and inviting and offers relevant information to new and existing tenants. In addition to the program sessions, NCPEI provides traditional teachings such as a sweat lodge ceremony to help tenants feel attached to cultural beliefs and practices.
The workshops and traditional teachings provide the tenants a chance to reconnect with members from the community and connect with the Indigenous culture. Tenants who participate in the Indigenous Tenant Support Initiative will be better prepared to address the challenges that surround living situations. This in turn can reduce the frequency of eviction and allow tenants to remain in one place.
