Indigenous Marine Safety Program
The Indigenous Marine Safety Program supports the implementation of Federal-Indigenous programming that improves the safety of Indigenous-owned recreational or commercial vessels, their use and operators. The IMC works in consultation with Transport Canada to develop region specific guidance for vessels and community interactions to improve marine safety and security.
As such, the Indigenous Marine Safety Coordinator is responsible for overseeing safety matters with all fishing programs allocated through the Native Council of PEI (communal commercial fishers; shellfish harvesters; food, social, ceremonial harvesters; etc.). Activities include conducting safety checks on communal commercial vessels, ensuring fishers have up-to-date safety equipment, monitoring daily safety checks, ensuring crews have up-to-date safety training certificates, leading training sessions, and conducting regular safety drills.
