Nanegkam Housing

In 1974, the Native Council of Prince Edward Island founded the Nanegkam Housing Corporation; a non-profit housing organization assisting off-reserve Indigenous people to acquire affordable off-reserve accommodations.

Over time NCPEI has expanded to include three Aboriginal Housing Programs:

The first housing project is The Native Council of PEI Aboriginal Housing Commission which provides affordable housing units within the Charlottetown area. The program’s family/single duplex units consist of three three-bedroom units and three one-bedroom units. Rental rates are affordable and are not subsidized. Rents include heat. The Emergency Repaid Program (ERP) is a program aiding homeowners in rural and remote areas to undertake emergency repairs required for the safety of their house. A significant portion of this program is allotted to Indigenous peoples. Assistance is in the form of a grant, depending on the cost of repairs.

The Homeowner Residential Rehabilitation Program (RRAP)
Offers financial help to low-income homeowners who need to make repairs to their homes. The program is aimed at people who live in substandard dwellings and cannot afford the necessary repairs to make their homes safer and healthier.

The Rural and Native Housing Program
The Rural and Native Housing (RNH) program is designed to help low-income families in rural areas obtain suitable, adequate, and affordable housing on a rental basis only. Because this program was designed to provide affordable housing, the rental payments are based on a percentage of your income.
