Indigenous Tenant Support Initiative (ITSI)

The Indigenous Tenant Support Initiative (ITSI) helps off-reserve Indigenous peoples on PEI who are facing eviction or at risk of becoming evicted. ITSI offers workshops and one-on-one supports that are designed to help tenants retain residences or be accepted into a new home. Supports are based on surveys of tenant needs which may include basic life skills, money management, career preparation, education, and employment support, with a strong focus on health and wellness (self care).
Monthly workshops are offered in each Zone in person, or across all three zones in an online format. If required, additional sessions can be added to meet tenant needs. The workshop environment is safe and inviting and offers relevant information to new and existing tenants. In addition to the program sessions, tenants are connected to opportunities to engage in traditional teachings such as sweat lodge ceremonies to help them feel connected to cultural beliefs and practices. These workshops and traditional teachings also provide tenants with a chance to connect with the Indigenous culture and with other members from the community. Tenants who participate in the Indigenous Tenant Support Initiative will be better prepared to address the challenges that surround living situations. This in turn can reduce the frequency of eviction and allow tenants to remain in one place and create a home where they feel comfortable and will be able to succeed.
