L’nu Fisheries Limited can provide employment opportunities for roughly 50 members in the commercial shellfish fisheries. L’nu Fisheries is also starting to get involved in the Aquaculture industry. We now have two oyster leases in western PEI and two mussel leases in eastern PEI.
L’nu Fisheries Limited has seven commercial lobster licence packages spread throughout the Island as well as three commercial rock crab licences, ten tuna licences and two groundfish licences.
These gears are used for employment as well as training opportunities for the membership of NCPEI. All profits from these licence packages are put back into the commercial growth of L’nu Fisheries Limited and NCPEI programming.
The primary object of L’nu Fisheries Limited is to promote, advance, and manage the Native Council of Prince Edward Island Aboriginal Communal Commercial Fishery allowing for the continued improvement of the social and economic condition and well being of the Native Council of Prince Edward Island and its community.
The renewed vision for the NCPEI ACCFE will generate greater employment opportunities for the NCPEI members interested in the commercial fishing industry.
The governance structure of L’nu Fisheries Limited is such that the board of directors for L’nu Fisheries Limited includes the President and Chief of the Native Council of Prince Edward Island, three Zone members, one fishermen’s representative and one representative from outside the community with fishery-related experience. The President of L’nu Fisheries Limited is filled by the office of the NCPEI Kelewatl Commissioner. This governance structure ensures that the close linkages with the Native Council of Prince Edward Island remain.
Purposes of L’nu Fisheries
- To protect the interests of the Traditional Ancestral Homeland Mi’kmaq/Aboriginal Peoples of Prince Edward Island as pertaining to the access and conduct of an Aboriginal communal commercial fishery
- To strive towards obtaining rightful access to Atlantic Aquatic Resources for the social and economic benefit of the Traditional Ancestral Homeland Mi’kmaq/Aboriginal Peoples of Prince Edward Island
- To promote, advance and manage the Aboriginal Communal Commercial Fishery for the social and economic improvement and well being of the Traditional Ancestral Homeland Mi’kmaq/Aboriginal Peoples of Prince Edward Island
- To foster predictable stakeholder relationships with governments, industry stakeholders and other relevant rights holders/stakeholders to advance the foregoing objects
- To hold annual and other meetings for the discussion of issues relevant to the access and conduct of an Aboriginal communal commercial fishery
- To employ or otherwise engage persons to assist the corporation in the fulfillment of the above-mentioned objects and purposes
- To do such other things necessary for fulfilling the above-mentioned objects and purposes
- To generally do and carry out all matters required by law
